Tips for making it to the gym (even when you don't want to) and making it count

We all have those moments where exercise is the last thing we want to do. I face this battle more often than people would think. It can be really hard to get moving if you're not "feeling" it.

After work we are tired. We have had long mentally and physically exhausting day where going home to the couch seems like a better option than working out. Little do people know that when you feel this way, it's the best time to get to get into your workout clothes.

No matter how I feel (unless I am actually sick or exhausted) I switch myself into robot mode and just head to the gym. Yes, I know this sounds silly, but as soon as I get there and get started I already start to feel better about myself. When I finish I have more energy than when I started.

I go to the gym after work 4 days a week. Snacking on a piece of fruit on my way home gives me a bit of sugar to perk me up and ensure I've got something in my body before I train. If I know I'm due for cardio I add some yoghurt. Don't over eat before you train or you WILL feel lethargic. You want to feel light and energised.

At the gym I sip on a BCAA. I use EHP labs or Core Nutrition. One scoop in 600ml of water gets me through the the workout and allows me to push myself further. BCAAs are Amino Acids, the building blocks of protein. Sipping on this drinks gives energy & endurance. It allows me to focus.

Weekends can also be hard in terms of making it to the gym. Maybe you had a big night? Maybe you slept in and can't get in the mood? My tip: TAKE. YOUR. TIME. Weekends are time for you to take a break. Don't feel in a rush to get the gym. Get up, have a good, nutritious breakfast and sip on a BCAA before changing and heading off. When you're relaxed you'll train better. The BCAA before hand will also keep you hydrated and get you focused.

I hope these tips help you train well. Just remember, one workout is an hour of your day. A small workout is better than none. Just think about how good you'll feel leaving the gym after you've trained!
